With the new era and advancement in technology, it is no doubt that everyone has to jump on the bandwagon to keep up with all these new changes. As teachers, we must also realize that finding creative ways to incorporate technology into our lessons is important not only to spark students’ interest but as a way of catering to the different learning styles in our classroom. Creating this digital media text on descriptive writing has given me quite an experience. It has exposed me to a new way of bringing information and diversity to the students in my classroom. This will be useful tool to grab and maintain students’ attention while creating the environment that will foster learning.
This experience has posed a few challenges for me as there is still a lot I need to learn about technology but I must confess that I learned quite a lot. At first, I did not know what a digital media text was and how to go about composing one. This had prompted me to do some research to find out what it entails.
Getting the information was quite easy but the challenge came when I had to compose the video to include pictures, songs, and a recording. I am quite aware that there are many apps such as movie maker, that can be used to achieve the desired results but a matter of how to go about using these apps was my weakest point. One thing I have learned during this experience that I will take with me throughout life is to ask for help. This is one of the easiest ways to overcome challenges and with this being said I was very fortunate to have a friend who knows a lot about technology and was willing to assist me in completing this task. As teachers, we may be faced with challenges in our classroom that may affect the quality of the lesson we hope to achieve, however, asking for help or using someone that is more knowledgeable is an added benefit. Moreover, this gives room for team teaching and the use of outside resources personnel to make a valuable impact on the students’ learning.
well done classmate!!! I particularly enjoyed and value your use of authentic foods to describe and not mere pictures from google with foods that we don't know. I think your descriptions were on point and I can definitely see students taking an interest with this and wanting to create their own descriptive video. I also value your uses of onomatopoeia and showcase of different parts of the market. This will definitely give students creative ideas to do their own piece.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone,
ReplyDeleteKennisha I love your multi-media composition and I appreciate the details of your experience mentioned in creating the piece. You mentioned that creating blogs caters for the different learning styles which is so true. I really love the idea of using the blogs in the classroom because there are so many students who are weak readers and often feel frustrated and pressured to create a composition in a short space of time. I'm thinking now that the use of the blogs could allow the weaker writers an opportunity to participate effectively in classes, by creating blogs with pictures and descriptions similar to yours.
What the blog does is take the pressure of having to write in order to get the message across. Those who prefer to blog using pictures, videos and audio can feel free to do so quite comfortably. As teachers we must give the students choices and allow them to feel comfortable in their learning environment, which will in turn most likely lead to a higher quality of work.
Kennisha you did an excellent multimodal composition. The inclusion of the song inviting us the market was so catchy and appealing. It also informed us of what was to come - a day at the market. Your use of adjectives and showing sentences were on point.I really like that you mentioned asking for help in your reflection. We sometimes think that we are too big to seek assistance but the truth is we all need help from time to time since we are not experts in every field.Likewise we have to remember that our students need help in becoming writers and it is our duty to meet their needs. As you mentioned multi media is a great way to cater to the various learning styles.
ReplyDeleteKennisher,I love the way you introduced your descriptive Multi-modial composition about the market, the descriptive words and locally produced foods makes you feel as though you really are at the market, not to mention the tooting of the vehicles creating the sounds of the market.I could literally envision the children seeing the market and enjoying the lesson too.
ReplyDeletehello everyone, i was just reflecting on the use of the multi media composition approach and i think this would be a great way to challenge students who are above average in the classroom. I believe that at times students become bored because they are not challenged to meet their fullest potential. The creation of multi media composition could take away the boredom and give new purpose to students.
ReplyDeleteI also think that because they may be well challenged in this regard, the students who are not as proficient in writing and may have knowledge and understanding of how to compose a multi media piece can be utilized to assist the now struggling students. This role reversal could be a wonderful way for students to learn to appreciate each other, rely on the strengths of each other and share knowledge.
After having the experience of having our work published and shared during our final session, I understand the importance of publishing students' work. For me, having the opportunity to listen to everyone read their pieces as it was meant to be read was a truly enjoyable experience. I was awed by the use of figurative language and the use of precise words in the different pieces. For me personally, i felt motivated to write and share some more especially because of the feedback from the lecturer, who gave positive, valuable and insightful feedback on each person's piece of work.
ReplyDeleteThe modeling by the facilitator in the way qualitative feedback was given showed me exactly how i should motivate my students when their work is published and shared.
Furthermore, the atmosphere/environment that was created by the teacher for the sharing of our work felt highly comfortable/relaxed which falls in line with what Krashen (1980) posited about having a relaxed environment. If we as Educators follow the example set by our facilitator upon or return to the classroom, then, our students will become more interested and motivated to learn and improve in the English classroom.
Excellent job Kennisha, I love your creativity! It was very captivating. I loved the incorporation of music and sounds which appealed to the audio senses. The introduction of multi-media text in the classroom would not only benefit the high flyers but also students who experience difficulty when writing as it appeals to the visual and audio senses. The modelling of a descriptive piece was also done very well.
